The first Home Board Homecoming was held August 26, 2009 at the
In addition to honoring past Home Board Chairs, the Homecoming was an opportunity for the current Home Board to reconnect with these amazing women and learn from the past achievements, challenges and legacy of the Home. Each table included a past Home Board Chair, past President, current Board member and a current Home Board member who facilitated the conversation. Conversations included discussions about the decision to racially integrate the Junior League Home, moving the Home to Vanderbilt, the definition of the “crippled child,” the Programs of the Home, the Trust, and how volunteers operated a 50-bed fully accredited hospital.
Such Junior League luminaries such as Damaris Steele (Home Board Chair 1954-1956), Helen Tanner (Home Board Chair 1966-1968), Susie Woolwine (Home Board Chair 1970-1971), and Past Presidents Mary Lee Manier (1960-1962), Fran Hardcastle (1975-1976), and Donna Cheek (1977-1978) and numerous others shared their insight and stories on the Junior League Home for Crippled Children - what Dr. Churchwell recently referred to as Nashville’s original children’s hospital.
