Kids in the Kitchen March Event

posted on

Kids in the Kitchen hosted a free cooking lesson and nutrition workshop Tuesday, March 21st at Edgehill Apartments. Nine children from the public housing community attended the event, where they made granola bars, parfaits, and quesadillas before learning about making healthy beverage choices and how to build a balanced meal using MyPlate.

They each went home with their leftovers as well as a lunchbox, water bottle, and Junior League cookbook. While League volunteers packed and cleaned up after the event, several children returned to ask when the next cooking lesson would take place and submit suggestions to make healthy versions of fried chicken, pancakes, and cupcakes.

This was the committee’s first time having a hands-on cooking event of this kind. We chose Edgehill Apartments because most of its residents are low income and many children in the community rely on food bank donations when they are on a break away from school.
