Junior League of Nashville Key Facts and Demographics
As you consider partnership opportunities moving forward, it may be helpful to review who we are and what we do.
♥ The JLN is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
♥ In 2007, we celebrated our 85th year in Nashville and have started over 20 non-profit agencies and programs - including Our Kids, Renewal House, and our most well known and longest running program - the JLN Home for Crippled Children. This Home now resides within the walls of the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital.
♥ In 2007, we gave more than $900,000 to community agencies, as well as giving our volunteer time and expertise.
♥ The Junior League movement is worldwide - there are 293 leagues in four countries (United States, Mexico, Canada and England). Our league ranks as the 12th largest in the world. We have nearly 1,800 members and they include:
108 Provisional members
These are new members, women age 23+ who are participating in a one year training program to become active members.
594 Active members
These are women ages 24+ who have completed the provisional year and are making a difference in the community through active service and leadership.
1,034 Sustaining members
These are women who have completed their active years of service with the league and who continue to serve in an advisory capacity. They range in age from 40-90 plus. Many of them serve on other community boards and typically 24-30 community nonprofit boards are chaired by JLN sustainers each year.
♥ Junior Leagues have very attractive demographics. A 2005 survey with NOP World (Roper Starch) reported the following impressive member statistics:
46% of our members have post graduate degrees or education
57% of our members work outside the home
48% of our members hold managerial/professional positions
$161,800 is the average household income of our members
Training and Communication Tools of the JLN
As a training organization we believe in lifelong learning. We offer a variety of opportunities for our members to grow, build relationships, and give back to the community. They include:
Training Courses
In addition to a full year's training course for our Provisional members, we also offer leadership training courses throughout the year to our Active and Sustaining members on topics addressing key issues affecting the city and nonprofits as well as how to become a better volunteer/board member. The JLN also offer personal growth courses on time, financial, and stress management.
Membership Meetings
Monthly general membership meetings are held throughout the year from September - May, with board meetings and council meetings occurring monthly from June - May. Our goal with all meetings is to educate and enrich women on skills needed to become and grow as leaders in the community.
Communication
We believe in active and interactive communication with our membership. In addition to our website, www.jlnashville.org all our members receive continuous communication through a weekly e-blast (Tuesday News), a printed newsletter (League Link), an annual report (Report to the Community) and a multitude of other mailings, postcards and phone calls throughout the year.
Fundraising & Events for Community Giving and Support
One of the key ways we make a difference in the community is through our fundraising and events that provide much needed community support. Funds raised support our community grants, given to agencies that align with our mission of providing for women, children and families and also aide in developing the potential for our members.
In 2010-2011, our fundraising endeavors and community events are the following:
- 'Tis the Season Holiday Marketplace
- Kids in the Kitchen
- Notably Nashville Cookbook
- Annual Fund and Endowment Campaigns
- Twice is Nice Rummage Sale
