Who We Are

The Junior League of Nashville is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. The Junior League of Nashville reaches out to women of all races, religions, and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism.

Vision

The Junior League of Nashville is a premier women’s volunteer organization that offers our members the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with others who are unified by a desire to give back to our community. Through the talents of a diverse membership we will support and enrich the lives of women, children and families in our community. Together we have greater impact than we do individually.

Milestones

■    Founded in 1922.

■     Founded the Junior League Home for Crippled Children in 1923.  The current Junior League Home is located at Monroe Carell, Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and elsewhere in the community through numerous programs.  Programs of the Junior League Home have included the Junior League Family Resource Center, Lily’s Garden, and Oasis Center

■     Founded 21 community projects since 1923, including Nashville Children’s Theater (1931), Dede Wallace Center (now Centerstone – 1956), OUR Kids (1987) and more recently, Renewal House (1996), the Junior League of Nashville Children’s Services at the downtown Nashville Public Library (2000) and the Junior League Eating Disorders Center at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital (2002).

■    Following an initiative created by the Association of Junior Leagues International, the Junior League of Nashville launched their first annual childhood obesity and nutrition education program, Kids in the Kitchen (2009).

■    JLN Home Board donated $150,000 to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt for creation of an Art Therapy Program to benefit children who are patients of the hospital (2010).

Affiliation

The Junior League of Nashville is a member of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. The Junior League of Nashville is the twelfth largest of more than 292 Junior Leagues throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Great Britain with a collective membership of almost 200,000 women.

What We Do

■ Explore the needs of our community concentrating on the areas of abuse and neglect, children and families at risk, educationally disadvantaged, health, voluntarism and quality of life.

■ Establish or affiliate with projects to meet the needs of our focus areas.

■ Provide trained volunteers and financial assistance to these projects.

2010-2013 Strategic Plan

■    Training: The League will transition its training program to serve the League’s operational needs and improve its impact in the community.

■    Membership Satisfaction: The League will endeavor to develop a lifelong relationship with each member.

■    Leadership: The League will make its governing decisions based on data about community needs and about its membership. The League will actively develop its structure and empower its members to make the greatest community impact in our chosen focus area and the Home Board focus area.

Finances

Membership dues and the JLN Annual Fund support general operating expenses for the Junior League of Nashville. Funding for our community services are derived from our annual fundraisers, including 'Tis the Season Holiday Marketplace and Twice is Nice Rummage Sale. We also have a Trust with a restricted purpose for programs of the Junior League Home.
